A lotta witches are miserable, unhappy, and ungrounded - they do magic for the wrong reasons, such as emotional instability, pettiness, anger, jealousy, or something else. Magic can absolutely be worked with to help us heal from trauma (as I talk about in my second graphic novel Bodymagic), however it seems that many people in witchcraft land aren't using magic to heal, but rather to further entrench themselves in their own negative habits, mindsets, and unhealthy ways of thinking. Our magic is limited by our own state of mind. In this episode, I discuss the state of witchy community, and how I think we can all work with magic in better, healthier ways.
Read MoreIs forgiveness necessary or relevant when we are healing our trauma, our shadows, and our wounds? Do we need to forgive family members, or anyone who has hurt us in the past? In this episode, I discuss my own healing journey, and how forgiveness - though it was not on my radar at all, and was not something I strived for - somehow happened to me anyway. Is forgiveness necessary for your journey? I explain why or why not, and offer a perspective contrary to what we tend to see in a lot of pop psych woo woo spaces. With so many people seeing family this holiday season, it seems a relevant topic to discuss!
Read MoreA certain kind of person will be inspired by you one minute and then block you the next. When they realize what you've built isn't quite so easy to achieve overnight, they end up resenting the fact that they ever encountered you. Their own failure at what you inspired them to do makes them resent you. They shift the blame onto you in order to avoid the pain of their own failure. They don't realize failure is a necessary initiation into the possibility of success.
Whatever side of that coin you fall on, whether you're a dreamer, influencer, small business owner, or just a human doing your best to live the best life possible, I'm sure you've failed, been resentful, been resented, been inspired, inspired others, and been tempted to blame everyone for your own failures (and give up on chasing your dreams). This episode talks about all of these complicated things, how they relate to each other, and how we can best look at things through these topsy turvy ups and downs.
Read MoreAre you overgiving? Are you having a hard time stopping? If so - or if you've experienced this in the past with others or within yourself - you won't want to miss this episode. Overgiving can come from a lack of boundaries, poor self-regulation, refusing to pour into and nourish ourselves, and a desire to be loved, accepted, and valued. Stop overgiving and reclaim your power and personal sovereignty. In this episode, I talk about why people overgive, how to stop overgiving, and how to slow down and pay attention to what your own body is telling you about your own capacity.
Read MoreAre you constantly making excuses about why you can't change? Do you love the attention and sympathy you get when you complain or act all woe is me? Maybe you suffer from an addiction to misery - and maybe you don't really want the change you say you do. In this episode, I break down this behaviour, and offer simple, helpful reframes for how to escape stagnation, move on, and live our best lives.
Read MoreIn this episode, I talk about this month's Mercury Retrograde, and how we can work with this energy to reflect on our own relationship to impulsivity, bad habits, and addictive behaviours. I frame this in terms of cultivating healthy masculine energy to contain ourselves and our desire for excess, rather than being at the whims of every feeling we have. This comes up with compulsory sexuality, excessive online shopping, porn usage, arguing online, cheating, drama addiction, and more - these are all energy leaks. If we are witches interested in directing our energy towards our goals, we need to get a handle on our energy leaks! Listen to this episode to learn more and to get some inspiration for what to reflect on this Mercury Retrograde.
Read MoreIn life, we will encounter many distractions. Online drama, gossip, pettiness, silly arguments, and more can pull us away from our life path: achieving our life purpose, healing, helping others, and becoming self actualized. In this episode, I talk about the difference between signal and noise in life, how easy it is to be distracted away from what really matters. I also discuss feminine and masculine energy and how they relate to self-regulation, impulsivity, self-control, and whim - why this is all relevant to witchcraft skills - and why this matters for living a good and aligned life.
Read MoreWhat if being a heretic is exactly what would set you free? In this episode, I discuss how choosing authenticity over approval—and integrity over conformity—can transform your life in powerful ways. It’s not easy; you may experience loss when you face your fears. I talk about how embracing your inner heretic might just be the most peaceful, soul-aligned decision you ever make, and why.
Read MoreIn this episode, I try to convince everyone to watch sports! Our bodies love to experience stress, and if we don't have a curated, intentional, time-bounded place to release and feel stress, we are much more likely to create drama in our lives and make mountains out of molehills. People stir the pot when they don't have a place to express that energy. There are so many reasons I feel all spiritually minded, witchy folks should engage with sports, and this is one of the many reasons why. Witchcraft and magic can be about changing consciousness at will, and the rising of healthy 'stress' energy can also be something we can direct towards an end goal, magically. Even if you're not a sports girly (as many witches are not, lol), I'd recommend giving this a listen - I just might change your mind!
Read MorePessimism and negativity are out, positivity and optimism are in: if I declare this to be true, that means it’ll be true, right? LOL, I wish! While I can’t snap my fingers and get rid of all the world’s negative Nancys and pessimistic depressed masses, what I CAN do is tell you about why cultivating a positive imaginary and worldview (and default perspective) isn’t spiritual bypassing (or bullshit), and about how it can and absolutely will make you a happier, healthier person. Will you join me in making sincerity and earnestness and optimism cool again?
Read MoreIn this episode I discuss one of the most important qualities in successful, happy, and growth oriented people: curiosity! I’ve noticed that in the past decade or so, it’s been significantly on the decline. I also talk about the rise of abstracting people into symbols, rather than listening/observing to see who people actually are. It’s become normal to dehumanize people with a different perspective, and this concerns me due to its potential implications for the future of democracy and the future of human relationships. Are you open to the idea that there are things you don’t know? Are you open to the idea that you could be wrong? Are you able to step off your moralistic high ground and consider things logically, rather than simply in an emotionally activated way? A very in-depth and important episode for today’s current political climate, especially in Canada and the United States. Curiosity impacts all aspects of our lives in a positive, growthy way.
Read MoreBelieve it or not, the title of this podcast episode is something Jordan Peterson said at a recent lecture I attended. He was speaking on personal growth and self improvement from a Christian lens, but when I heard those words, my own worldview and cosmology - which place an enormous emphasis on witchcraft - came to mind. To me, it's such a witchy phrase! In this episode, I explain what this phrase means to me, why I relate it to how witchcraft and magic work, and what the intentional self-loving, self-improvement oriented witch can take from the phrase as we build our spiritual practice and ourselves. (And in the back of my mind, I can't help but wonder - is Jordan Peterson a witch?)
Read MoreHey y'all! Happy eclipse season! In this episode, I talk a little bit about the eclipse portal we're currently in, how I'm working with it as a Virgo rising, how important it is to try new things, challenge ourselves, be open to being wrong, be open to new ideas, and - crucially - being and staying curious.
Read MoreAs therapy speak becomes more common, I've noticed that many people have a total misunderstanding of what boundaries actually are. People will complain about 'boundaries' when other people don't behave how they want them to. But - newsflash - boundaries are at their core really about US, and our behaviour: the one thing we do have control over. In this episode, I talk about what boundaries are, and how best to think about and enact them.
Read MoreThis Thursday, we have a full moon in Virgo total lunar eclipse that is visible in North America. In this episode, I'll talk about what these energies swirling around mean for us personally, what to expect, why to view the eclipse if you can, and how to make the best of the potent energetic shifts we'll experience this eclipse season.
Read MoreI had a great time at my first ever podcasting conference and event: Podcamp Toronto! In this episode, I share a bit about what I learned, and share thoughts on some conversations/themes present in the podcasting space, including corporate vs DIY, YouTube and video-based podcasts, how people self-sabotage by never starting (and always leaving it til later), why I love chatting with strangers in hallways (and am always pleasantly surprised by who they turn out to be), and where some of the big knowledge can be found at these events. Should I apply next year to speak? What do you guys think? Did I leave anything out that you'd like me to address? Let me know!
Read MoreI've noticed an unsettling pattern in many astrology creators and influencers today: a tendency to leave everything 'transformational' in the future, that the next big thing is always around the corner, we just have to wait for everything to change signs and then boom. In this episode, I share some criticisms and worries about what kind of mindset and approach to life this 'passive' attitude towards astrology and spirituality create, and why I think witchcraft does a better job of - should we choose it - connecting us with our own personal power, agency, and efficacy to create change.
Read MoreFor many, it can be so tempting to live a secret life. Being our true, honest selves can be scary: will anyone accept us in our mess? Will we get called out by friends and family for behaving badly or acting out of line? Would anyone truly love us if they knew all our kinks, desires, mistakes, and ugly points? When no one knows who we truly are, we insulate and isolate ourselves. When our friends, family, and community don't know who we actually are behind closed doors or what we're going through, it's easy to delude ourselves that everything is all good. Self-isolation is an unhealthy avoidance tactic: when we do this, we avoid both the possibility for true love and acceptance (and growth), and also having to be accountable (and perhaps make amends) for who we truly are. In this episode, I talk about why it's so much better to live an honest, transparent and vulnerable life, than one hidden in the darkness and the shadows.
Read MoreThis episode is about testing out our internal algorithms, our standard operating procedures, and the rules and regulations by which we lead our lives. I outline four of the main ways we - in my opinion - create these rules, and I discuss a recent example of breaking one of my own long-standing rules, how that went, and what I learned. What are the rules that create the boundaries of your own life? This episode will give you a lot to think about as you ponder your own life and circumstances.
Read MoreIn this episode, I talk about the importance of consistency, predictability, and reliability in all relationships, but especially romantic ones. Consistency creates emotional safety and trust in relationships, which creates more space for authentic intimacy to blossom. Listen to learn more about why this is so important. (And, side note: this isn't about perfectionism, but rather healthy emotionality and relating.)
