What is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction, often shortened to simply LOA, involves working with energy and vibration to change your life – ideally, to transform it quite radically for the better - through changing what's going on in your brain and in your energetic vibration as a being on this planet.
Most of us move throughout life without much thought, awareness, consideration, or intention - we don’t know what frequency we’re vibrating on, and we don’t care. The thing is, according to basic spiritual energetic principles, our energetics do matter and do have an impact on the life we lead.
I’m not one of those people that feels our own ‘bad vibe’ is to blame for every bad thing that happens to us - of course, life is chaos, and sometimes bad things happen to good people. After all, life is life - none of us goes on this journey and emerges totally unscathed, with no unpleasant experience ever. That would be impossible.
So, instead of thinking of the LOA as a form of spiritual avoidance, more commonly known as ‘spiritual bypassing,’ we can think of it as simply an assertive, forward-thinking way to move forward in life with gusto and change what we DO have control over in this world: ourselves. Our beliefs, our frequency, our mindset, our attitude. All of this comes into play with the LOA.
The LOA operates under the belief that by vibrating at a positive, abundant frequency, we can attract more of that positive energy towards us, and thus help us improve our circumstances. Of course, we have our own responsibility to take inspired action, too - but changing how we vibrate, our basic energetic baseline and state of being, also plays a big part here. Like attracts like, and energetically we can use this to our advantage on a magical and spiritual level.
Why do some people dislike and criticize the Law of Attraction?
The LOA does get a lot of flack from critics, as I alluded to a bit above - and so i know some of y’all will probably be surprised to see me mentioning it in a way that isn’t fully negative. But to be honest, I find the LOA to be a pretty useful reminder to constantly cultivate awareness of our state of mind. What’s the point in being overly critical (of ourselves, of others) all the time, anyway? What do we really get out of that? How does that improve our lives? Newsflash, it doesn’t.
Some people misunderstand the LOA to mean that we are responsible for every bad thing that’s ever happened to us - that if we experience a trauma, get fired from a job, get dumped, get abused, that it’s because we ‘attracted’ that experience. Personally, I think that’s total bullshit, and in my understanding that’s absolutely not what the LOA is about. As opposed to being victim blaming, the LOA can be empowering.
Obviously there are certain things we don’t have control over - being born into an abusive family, for instance. We have no control over that one. And we don’t have any control over when we were born, or where. I definitely don’t think anyone born into poverty or a war zone attracted that. The LOA isn’t about all that. What the LOA is about is what we can control - our own thoughts, our own vibration, our own energy, our own mindset. Random chaos and unpleasant things are unavoidable in life. But what is avoidable is having our energetic being always in a state of negativity, displeasure, and pessimism. So, if that’s a problem for you, for your own sake, please do seek out some help, even therapy.
Of course, if something bad happens to you, or something challenging happens in your life - mourn it, process it, feel it. Absolutely. But don’t stay there longer than you need to. I don’t really see what’s so toxic about saying that.
Why should witches care about the Law of Attraction?
The LOA, weirdly, is rejected by most witches as being just boring, hokey new age bullshit - which is funny and makes no sense to me, because it basically functions mechanically in many of the same ways as the energetic principles of magic and witchcraft. What is witchery for attraction, really, other than operating on a ‘like attracts like’ principle? For a sweet love, we use fruit and honey, for a spicy love we work with cinnamon and chili pepper. Like energetically attracts like, right? Otherwise, we’d be using spinach and kale in a love spell.
In my opinion, any serious witch interested in actually working in a meaningful way with energy needs to understand the LOA and how it relates to magic, how it already is embedded within so many magical techniques from around the world.
Witches often work with the LOA by selecting certain materials to do magic with (incense, candles, herbs, etc), specific deities and saints, and also by techniques like chanting and vocalizing rhymes.
So, if you’re skeptical about the LOA… think a little deeper about it. It’s not as hokey and irrelevant as many people in witchcraft and magic communities feel it is. Instead of skepticism, why not be curious - how can you test out these ideas for yourself? How might you be doing that already?
If you’re curious about all this, one very low-stakes way to experiment with the Law of Attraction is to do affirmations - every single day, if you can. I personally read my own long ass list of affirmations every single day, morning and night, and it’s made a massive positive impact in my life and on my mindset.
