Three Myths About Healing Christmas Trauma
I share regular musings in my private email newsletter. Interested in signing up? Click here.
So, friends, it’s January.
How did Christmas go for ya?
If you had a great time, feel free to click away and ignore this blog post.
But if it wasn’t everything you wanted… read on.
Myth #1: If I keep doing the same thing, I’ll get a different result.
If you’ve had a hard time during the holidays for as long as you remember, and you keep saying YES to situations that don’t light you up… you’re setting yourself up for both failure and misery.
It’s easy to think it’ll be different this year, different next year, different the year after that.
If only (insert relevant relative here) saw things a little differently, everything will be perfect and rosy this time! I’ll just keep going to events and obligations that drain my soul from my body, and eventually it’ll all feel rosy and wonderful.
Sorry darling, that’s a fantasy, not real life.
And a big part of being a functional adult is living in reality.
For a different result – a different life – you’ll need to take different action.
Myth #2: I don’t need to have stronger boundaries, I can just keep saying yes to everyone.
Nice girl/human syndrome much?
‘Fawn’ is a common trauma response, and if you find yourself trying to please everyone, saying yes to every request ever, ignoring your own boundaries, desires, and needs… it would really benefit you, your brain, your body, and your spirit to switcheroo this behaviour and become more boundaried.
When we put the needs of others over our own limits, we dishonour and disrespect our own selves. This is super common around the Xmas season, and is often at fault for when we feel overrun and retraumatized.
Myth #3: It’ll always be this way, so why bother.
UM, NO, FRIEND!
It does absolutely NOT have to always be miserable.
Trust me. I’ve been in your shoes, I know how it is, and it’s possible to create a different life, a different reality for yourself.
Yes, you’ll have to challenge yourself a little bit by stretching into that next level of yourself – but it’s so, so worth it.
Lemme show ya how?
