3 Reasons You’re Not Making Money

Greetings and happy Friday the 13th, beautiful humans!
Today I’m gonna cut right to the chase… and tell you three reasons your business isn’t making money.
Ready? Ok, let’s go!
Reason #1: You don’t put yourself out there.
Contrary to popular belief, people like to buy from other people.
If we don’t know anything about a business or a brand, it’s hard to build trust and rapport. If you’re too afraid to be vulnerable on social media, on your website, put your face out there, if people ask you about your business and your motivations and you sound like a robot or a form letter… people won’t be down.
Business is based on the know, like, and trust factor – and so, yes, that means that you’ll have to be vulnerable, and let people actually get to know you.
Yes, this means it’ll benefit you to be your unique, honest, weird, quirky self. If you’re blunt and swear a lot – be you! Two of my courses end in ‘…Without Bullshit,’ after all, so this has clearly worked for me – and it’s not put on, it’s actually just naturally how I talk.
I remember I was at an arts fair once, talking about my work and life and I sprinkled a few swear words in there without even realizing I was doing it. Someone overheard me and chastised me afterwards, saying there were kids around – oops! But, that didn’t really stop me, lol. They ain’t my kids, LOL, not my responsibility. I’m gonna be me, and if folks don’t like it… they can go to another booth, sign up for another teacher.
What can you learn from that? BE YOU. Swear, don’t swear; I don’t care – as long as what you’re communicating – and how you’re communicating it – are so natural to you that it doesn’t feel forced.
Just be you.
Yes, some people will be repulsed – I’m sure some people are repulsed by me. That’s awesome. Being unapologetically vulnerably you just means the people who are perfect clients for you will find you and love you faster.
Reason #2: You’re generic.
One big failure point is when people try to serve everyone in their business.
Could everyone benefit from learning magic and tarot? Yes, absolutely, but in the way that I brand and market myself and what I do, I’m not really talking generically to everyone. By being authentically me – see my last point – it’s impossible to be generic, and I’m able to attract folks who are as quirky, driven, thoughtful, blunt, and as genuine as I am. It’s a blessing – but I can only do this by being unapologetically me, aka, not generic whatsoever.
Uniqueness and specificity helps people know our work is for them. Oftentimes newbie business owners are afraid to turn away clients, and think all money is good money, all clients are good clients. Trust me, that’s not really true. And when you’re individual, specific, and not generic, you’ll end up working with clients or customers that are attracted to what makes you and your product/service/business unique and special.
Dare to have a point of view.
Generic businesses try to speak to everyone, and end up attracting no one.
Reason #3: You’re afraid to ask for the sale.
This was me for the longest time – I was so afraid of rejection that I didn’t make offers, I didn’t sell anything, and when people did give me money, I felt bad about it.
Business is personal – and when, like me, you’re the face of your brand, rejection or hearing no can feel absolutely crushing, like a personal affront.
So, in order to avoid negative feelings, I see a lot of folks shy to sell their stuff, afraid to ask for the buy. If you don’t ask, they can’t say no, right? If I don’t ask, I’ll never be rejected, right!?
Well, yes, that’s true… but you’ll also never grow your business, and you’ll never feel the highs that occur when people see your value, believe in you, and actually buy whatever it is you’re selling, be it product, service, or something in between.
Are you guilty of any of these?
Whether you are or aren’t, I’m willing to bet I could teach you how to make your business more successful.
